Graptolites fossil record is of a global scale. They are exclusively found in marine sedimentary rocks of the upper Cambrian right through the Ordovician, Silurian and the Lower Carboniferous. They are commonly found in black, organic and iron sulphide rich mudstones and shales, the so called ‘graptolite facies’ (Jstor, 2014).

The rocks you need to split are easy to identify, being black when weathered.
